Lights Out For LiLo? Lindsay Gets Mixed Reviews On SNL Performance
People Magazine gave Lilo a positive review for her lack luster performance on SNL this weekend, but the NY Post said she stumbled through her lines on Saturday night, even when she was clearly reading them off of cue cards. Spoek Mathambo – Father Creeper

Spoek Mathambo?s sound is as tricky to pin down as a wriggling fish. This South African MC-producer blends elements of rock, rap, dubstep, electro, house and vintage Prince into a unique fusion that?s been called ?township tech?. Diplo?s already been in touch, natch, recruiting him for an abrasive remix of Robyn?s ?Dancehall Queen?. So it?s no shock that Father Creeper, his Sub Pop debut and second solo LP overall, could equally be called ?a bit of a din?. But in a good way – it?s got piles of ideas, some biting M.I.A.-style hooks, and all the grimy vibrancy of a night out in Soweto.

The Next NAfME Webinar Takes Music Education Advocacy Back to the Basics
On Wednesday, March 14, 2012, the advocacy staff of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) will present a new webinar, “Advocacy 101: Advocacy in the Community.” The webinar will be presented from 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM ET.
The webinar will focus on ways to show support for music education in the community and how to inspire others to advocate for school music programs. Members from several states will describe their local advocacy experiences and share ideas to help spur local advocacy strategies for music educators.
This will be the first in a series of three NAfME webinars focusing on the different levels of advocacy—local, state, and federal.
Register for the webinar:

The previous webinar centered on a report authored by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) entitled “Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America’s Future through Creative Schools.” The webinar is archived at advocacy.nafme.org/reinvesting-in-arts-education.
During that webinar, Rachel Goslins, PCAH executive director, discussed the report and answered questions. The webinar offers an insider’s view of the PCAH report, which clearly showed the effect of arts education on student academic achievement and creativity.

NAfME Works with U.S. Department of Education to Create Focus Group
In late 2011, Laurie Calvert, teaching ambassador fellow at the U.S. Department of Education (ED), asked NAfME if music teachers would like to participate in a Department focus group. ED aims to “greatly transform the teaching profession so that it is much more highly regarded, better compensated, and thought of as a true profession,” according to Calvert.
Before implementing any new policy, the Department intends to ask questions and discuss ideas with 25 K–12 music educators to gather their feedback on the proposed education initiative.
In early February, NAfME put out a call to K–12 teachers in Delaware, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, DC, asking for volunteers for the focus group. Twenty slots filled within two hours of the notice going out; the Department allowed NAfME to expand the group to 25.
The group discussion will be held at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC, on February 29th. Participants were asked to complete assigned reading in advance to inform them of the initiative and make for richer dialogue.
After the event, NAfME staff will post short interviews with the focus group members on Groundswell.

A National Conversation About Teaching
On February 15, U. S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan made an announcement about an initiative to “transform the teaching profession” and launched a national conversation about teaching. The town-hall-style conversation included teachers, representatives of teaching associations, and other teacher-led reform groups. The proposed campaign is named RESPECT (Recognizing Educational Success, Professional Excellence and Collaborative Teaching).
This project will be the theme of the focus group the Department of Education will hold on February 29 (see above).

Michael Kiwanuka – Home Again

It’s rare that the hype surrounding an artist translates to genuinely wonderful music. Rare, but not impossible, as ?Home Again? proves. Warm, beautifully recorded vintage soul is the unashamed goal here and there are no weak links. The Bill Withers comparisons may seem a little grandiose but Kiwanuka possesses a quite phenomenal voice, which he flexes and curls around joyous moments such as ?Tell Me A Tale? and ?I?ll Get Along?. With an acoustic undercurrent and sympathetic production from Paul Butler of The Bees, this is an absolute treat for fans of rootsy vintage soul and a remarkable statement of intent for a debut release.

Listen: Beach House – Myth

Beach House are streaming new track ‘Myth’ – taken from their proposed new album.
With the release of ‘Teen Dream’, Beach House seemed to take a massive leap forward. Sublime dream-pop, the band won tremendous critical acclaim.
So a follow up is eagerly anticipated. Earlier this year reports emerged that Beach House had completed a new album, potentially titled ‘Bloom’. Quickly dismissed by Sub Pop, lingering suspicions remained amongst fans.
Now Beach House are streaming a new track. ‘Myth’ is all sighing vocals, melting guitar lines and beautiful songcraft, with the band appearing ready to pick up at the exact point where ‘Teen Dream’ left off.

The Duke Spirit – Live At The Cockpit, Leeds

?Things may come to those who wait… but only the things left by those who hustle.? Abraham Lincoln said. Well, The Duke Spirit have been hustling since 2003 and yet still wait for things rightfully earned. More recognition and bigger budget tours for starters. It?s a peculiar relationship the band holds with the UK. Being the land they hail from the band hold their standing here to heart ? yet they are bigger in America and have won great success in Australia, Japan and Germany.
They do have a solid and loyal UK fan base but The Duke Spirit aren?t yet playing bigger tours and you can?t help but wonder if the they might feel a little confounded by not quite making it to the next level. In the same way that The Black Keys have gone stratospheric and are packing out venues like the Alexandra Palace, the Duke Spirit could easily deliver a big budget show.
Tonight at the Cockpit it?s a smaller affair but at least it?s a sold out show. It?s a mixed crowd that encompasses several generations, there are a few youngsters, a majority chunk in their 20s and 30s, and a small but significant slice of elderly rockers. A sozzled granny and a white-haired bloke in a hiker?s cagoule really give it some in the thick of the front row.
They begin with ?Into The Fold? from second album, 2008?s ?Neptune? and ?Procession? from new release ?Bruiser? but it?s a worrying start as the mix and the sound levels are all to cock, leaving the band sounding muffled and discordant. After a few words to the wise from the microphone of Moss the techies thankfully sort their shit out and the songs gain some clarity.
From here on in the band are compelling, led with frenetic conviction by the firecracker stage presence of Liela Moss.
After a pause they surge into the broody lament of ?Bottom of The Sea? from debut album ?Cuts Across the Land?. A bewitchingly dark, atmospheric song, it builds to a steady crescendo with grumbling percussion and dirge guitars while Moss seethes ?Bye, farewell, so long to you, no more of you, you little witch.? The distorted blues howl of ?Win Your Love? follows and just as things are really cooking they take it down a notch as Moss sits behind her Korg keyboard for the gentle lull of new track ?Villain?. The audience fall silent as she plays the haunting piano refrain that draws you in as the song grows to a barely restrained, hope tinged plea.
Back onto her feet for more new songs from 2011?s ?Bruiser?, Moss skulks back and forth across the stage emanating a tantalizing mix of sexual allure and rock menace. ?Surrender? is an insistent, driving affirmation and ?Bodies? a lurching beast crowned with a delicate vocal. The audience responds throughout and is eventually whipped into a bouncing mosh by a clutch of stand out tracks from the first two albums, culminating with a storming rendition of ?Love Is An Unfamiliar Name?.
There?s no chance of them getting away without an encore and after an obligatory quick rest off stage the band reassemble to play out with the blues stomp of ?This Ship Was Built To Last? the Stax tempo pulse of ?You Really Wake Up The Love In Me? and a thunderous ?Cuts Across The Land?.
The Duke Spirit was bigger than the venue tonight and by rights they should be bringing their sound to greater crowds. They display no trace of resentment at still playing relatively small venues though. On the contrary, Moss expresses sincere thanks to everyone for coming, especially the ?faces I can see who?ve been watching us for years.?
Few acts in the music business can take success for granted. Thankfully, the Duke Spirit embody an indomitable belief that their time will come and the rewards will be well-earned and all the sweeter for it.

Little Dragon – Live At O2 Academy, Bristol

Little Dragon are at an odd place right now. The success of ‘Ritual Union’ (the song), and Yukimi Nagano’s attention-grabbing ? and brilliant ? collaborations with Gorillaz and SBTRKT have earned them popularity, and a large crowd. But ?Ritual Union? (the album) still feels like a bit of a let-down; a sporadically pleasing, but undernourished follow up to 2008′s excellent ?Machine Dreams?.
Spooky support comes in the form of Holy Other. He’s a mysterious one, Mr Other. You can tell that because a) no one outside of his inner circle (and, presumably, his mum) knows his real name, b) he’s signed to Tri-Angle ? purveyor of all things witch housey, and c) he’s wearing a shroud over his head. Yes, a shroud. Unfortunately, given that his performance is basically him manipulating a sampler (in a shroud), it’s not the most visually exciting of performances. Doesn’t matter, it sounds pretty ace, all densely throbbing bass and half-formed female vocals. One track sounds like a house tune, slaughtered at the altar of Genesis P-Orridge. But, it’s so not suited to a half-empty Academy dance floor. This is music for smaller, more intimate, and preferably subterranean venues.
Little Dragon arrive shortly after, Yukimi dressed in what appears to be a pair of gold spandex tights and a PVC kimono. ?It’s great to be back!? she says. What, in the Bristol Academy? Really? Well, OK…
They certainly sound like they mean it. ‘Looking Glass’ is a gentle way into the set. It’s quickly followed by ‘Ritual Union’ ? the song you imagine a lot of the audience is here for. Little Dragon are a brave band playing their big hit so early in a set, but it works. The already packed floor is moving.
It’s not until ‘Brush The Heat’, though, that the tone of the show is set. A reasonably sedate, slightly forgettable song on CD is transformed here into an extended polyrhythmic jam. It’s a tactic that the band returns to four or five times during the night, with drummer Erik Bodin getting a solid workout. And it sounds fantastic. Music that previously felt polished, but sometimes a little cool and distant, is now fierce and alive. Tonight Little Dragon aren’t a cute indie-electro group – they’re an impressively tight dance act. ‘My Step’, already one of the band’s best tracks, sounds phenomenal and funky.
When they change pace, then, with ‘Test’ and ?Crystalfilm?, it feels jarring. They?re wallpaper songs, too discreet and nice to stand out on such a raucous evening. But hey! There’s a man in the crowd here who looks eerily like Grant Morrison. A gorgeous, ethereal ‘Feather’ gets everyone moving again. Kudos to the wonderfully into it guy throwing extravagant Christian rock moves.
The night ends with ‘Twice’, the first song from the first album. Yukimi murmurs quietly over a gently ebbing piano loop. It’s atmospheric, but not sombre or overbearing. An appropriate end to a night that left this reviewer clear that while ?Ritual Union? may have left him cold, live Little Dragon are just fucking great.

2012 All-American Marching Band Member Announced with Fanfare at Chantilly, Virginia, Event
On October 28, shortly before taking the stage as the newest member of the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band (USAAAB), William Morgan Palmer was asked how much he sleep he gets.
“Not much,” the Chantilly (Virginia) High School drum major said with a laugh. An understatement, since he also plays tenor saxophone in different band ensembles. He also heads the school debate team, and was named Chantilly homecoming king shortly before the USAAAMB announcement.
Band director Drew Ross said Palmer “really is a leader in everything he does.” At a recent football game, Palmer noticed there wasn’t a lot of cheering for the Chantilly Chargers, the band director said.
Ross said through sheer enthusiasm Palmer got band members and other students cheering enthusiastically during the game.
“When I started thinking about a student I would encourage to apply for the All-American band, William was the first student I thought of, both for his musicianship and for his leadership skills.”
Director of Bands Drew Ross (center,) and Christopher Singleton, associate director of bands took the stage with Palmer.
The USAAAMB will perform the halftime show at the bowl, which will be played on Saturday, January 7, 2012, at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Elvis Costello: Don’t Buy My Box Set

Elvis Costello’s official website is currently recommending that fans do not buy his upcoming box set.
Elvis Costello has always been a contrary figure. At the height of punk the songwriter wore Buddy Holly specs, with his deeply intelligent songwriting standing apart from the ’1-2-3-4′ cliques.
Now, though, the singer has broken new ground. Elvis Costello’s new box set ?The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!? is set to be released on December 6th, containing a raft of special material.
Yet due to the price – currently at over £200 on Amazon – Elvis Costello’s website carries a message advising fans not to buy the release.
“Unfortunately, we at www.elviscostello.com find ourselves unable to recommend this lovely item to you as the price appears to be either a misprint or a satire” it states, in a posting headed ‘Steal This Album’.
Continuing, the message implores fans to spend their money elsewhere. “All our attempts to have this number revised have been fruitless but rather than detain you with tedious arguments about morality, panache and book-keeping – when there are really bigger fish to filet these days – we are taking the following unusual step.”
“If you should really want to buy something special for your loved one at this time of seasonal giving, we can whole-heartedly recommend, ?Ambassador Of Jazz? – a cute little imitation suitcase, covered in travel stickers and embossed with the name ?Satchmo? but more importantly containing TEN re-mastered albums by one of the most beautiful and loving revolutionaries who ever lived ? Louis Armstrong.”
“The box should be available for under one hundred and fifty American dollars and includes a number of other tricks and treats. Frankly, the music is vastly superior.”
Read the full message HERE.
?The Return Of The Spectacular Spinning Songbook!!!? is set to be released on December 6th. Elvis Costello has confirmed the following shows:

Nebraska Music Educators Association Celebrates 75th Anniversary
NMEA members met for the first time in 1937.
When members of the Nebraska Music Educators Association (NMEA) meet for their annual conference November 16–18 in Lincoln, they will celebrate their 75th anniversary with fanfares and a special program. NMEA is a federated state affiliate of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME).
Rex Barker, NMEA president, said: “As teachers and musicians we know it is important to celebrate. Without celebrations, there would be a lot less music and probably vice versa. The 75th Anniversary [of NMEA] gives us a chance to reflect on our history and appreciate the trails blazed by members of the past. They established the philosophies and guiding principles of our organization. It always takes an extra effort to get things started, and we have all benefitted from their efforts.”
He added: “Our members over the years have amazing stories to tell of successes and challenges. We learn so much from each other by visiting with each other and sharing these stories in formal clinic sessions or informal gatherings.”
That sharing, Barker said, extends to relationships the state association has with clinicians and guest conductors who participate in NMEA conferences. “The opportunity to meet and share ideas is critical to the health and strength of our profession,” he said.
The NMEA president also said that through the anniversary celebrations, current and future NMEA members can learn more about the history of the organization but also “bring the ideas and questions that allow us to reflect on what we are doing and test our traditions against current trends and needs.”

Thursday Go On Hiatus

New Jersey group Thursday have decided to place themselves on hiatus after enduring “personal difficulties”.
Way back when, ‘emo’ didn’t refer to stadium rock bands in make up – instead, the scene was a close knit collection of groups who added a personal dimension to the often dry lyrical palette of post-hardcore.
Formed in the late 90s, Thursday went on to become one of the best loved groups to emerge from that initial blast. The band released a total of six proper, official studio albums which charted their evolution.
However it seems that the band are preparing to part company. Issuing a statement, Thursday broke the news to fans but left the door open for the occasional live performance in the future.
The statement reads (in part):
- – -
Well, if you?ve been touched by our music or our dedication or our embarrassingly out-of-fashion sincerity, then this is for you, friend: thank you for letting us make No Devolución. We hope you?ve heard it. We say ?beg, borrow or steal? music is an idea? ideas are free? but we encourage you to support our fantastically sweet and hardworking label, Epitaph, by buying it if you can afford to.
Despite the fantastic year that the band has enjoyed, creatively, things haven?t been as easy for us on a personal level. Without diving into detail, it?s fair to say that this year has been an endless series of personal difficulties. We haven?t had any falling out and are all still close. I?m sure that we will continue to create, in some capacity, together. We?ve talked about turning Thursday into something else: a non-profit, a band that only records sporadically, a collection of other projects? Underneath it all, the personal circumstances involved make it impossible to continue Thursday in the spirit that has made it special. So, we stop. For now, at least.
- – -
Read the statement in full HERE.
Thursday aren’t quite over yet. The band have a number of tour obligations to fulfil, with the New Jersey band set to finish the Stateside dates with a Philadelphia show on December 30th.
An annual tradition, the show will no doubt be an emotional occasion for everyone involved with Thursday.

Bob Dylan Tribute Album

A new Bob Dylan tribute album is in the works, with all funds going towards Amnesty International.
Now in his 70s, Bob Dylan’s work retains a rare potency. Rock’s poet laureate, the songwriter must surely rank as one of the most covered artists of all time, with his output being re-worked around the globe.
Now a massive box set aims to bring together a series of cover versions. ‘Chimes Of Freedom’ contains 75 tracks, with some 80 musicians helping to bring the box set together.
The tracks move throughout the songwriter’s career, including all facets of Bob Dylan’s output. The full cast list is so lengthy it would be counter productive to name each and every track, but suffice to say that ClashMusic is looking forward to hearing what Joan Baez, Jackson Browne, Cage The Elephant, Queens Of The Stone Age, Patti Smith, Raphael Saadiq, Bettye Lavette and more come up with.
Set to be released on January 30th, ‘Chimes Of Freedom’ is in aid of Amnesty International. ?Bob Dylan?s music endures because he so brilliantly captures our heartbreak, our joy, our frailty, our confusion, our courage and our struggles,? said Karen Scott, Amnesty International?s Manager of Music Relations.
?His words convey a depth of meaning that few artists can equal, inspiring us and always moving ahead of our expectations. We at Amnesty International are deeply grateful to this legendary musician and to all of the artists who have contributed to this project.?

Track Of The Day 24/11 – colourmusic

Toasting their 13th anniversary, Memphis Industries have every right to party.
The English label have maintained a commitment to new music, taking chances where other imprints might have winced. Sticking to their own tastes, Memphis Industries have built up a roster which includes a love for homegrown talent as well as a taste for the exotic.
Hailing from Oklahoma, colourmusic are definitely in the latter camp. The band’s music doesn’t so much progress as evolve, continually shifting and changing into something new.
The band are as likely to introduce pop R&B elements as they are a slide guitar, with their psych wig outs something to behold.
colourmusic have a conceptual edge. Refusing to divulge specific interests and influences, the band instead cite colours as the starting point for their music.
To the band, each colour represents an emotion, a moment which can be pinned down. Debut album ‘my _____ is pink’ is a case in point – using colours to express human sexuality, colourmusic are able to remove any sense of titillation, instead dwelling on pure feeling.
Memphis Industries are set to celebrate their anniversary with the all star Lucky Thirteen concert next week. Taking place on November 30th, London’s KOKO will house a night long celebration of the label’s roster.
Taking control of the Track Of The Day section for one week, Memphis Industries are giving away a host of new music. ‘Tog’ by colourmusic is typically idiosyncratic, with its breezy, surrealistic songwriting palette placing it in a psych context.

Watch: Tyler, The Creator – The Cartoon

Tyler, The Creator has made a guest appearance on the cartoon series ‘The Regular Show’.
Odd Future have always had a cartoon element. The rap collective often hit back at critics using that defence, stating that the violence and misogyny of their lyrics are so over the top that they shouldn’t be taken seriously.
Now Tyler, The Creator has been literally transformed into a cartoon. The rapper recently made a guest appearance on The Regular Show, shown rapping with some regular characters on the Cartoon Network series.
Speaking to fans on his Twitter feed, the rapper said the series is “LIKE MY SECOND FAVOURITE SHOW”.
Continuing, Tyler, The Creator joked about the clean cut nature of the show. “THAT WAS AWKWARD RAPPING WITH OUT SAYING FUCK”.
Watch a clip below…

The game is at 1 PM ET and will be broadcast on NBC. The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) is the official selection partner of the USAAAMB and partners with title sponsor, the U.S. Army, along with Drum Corps International and All-American Games for the annual event.
Arts students at the school attended the ceremony in the school auditorium. They responded with raucous applause when his selection was announced.
Students celebrate the USAAAMB announcement.
Palmer’s mother, Pearline Morgan Palmer, said her son has always been involved with a slew of activities, and has stayed in contact with many of his teachers over the past few years. His elementary school principal and kindergarten teacher were among those attending the ceremony.
Pearline Palmer and William Palmer
“I am excited to have the opportunity to practice and perform with other kids who love the same thing you do,” William Palmer said.
Major Fromm welcomes Palmer to the 2012 USAAAMB
During the ceremony, U.S. Army Major Fromm congratulated him on his music achievements, and said the USAAAMB selection acknowledged “his leadership skills and his ability to motivate others.”
Palmer accepted his USAAMB cap and jacket and said, “I want to thank God and my family for this honor. In particular my mom, who stayed up most of the night when I needed to submit my audition video and our computer wasn’t working.”
William Palmer speaks during the ceremony.
He also thanked fellow band members: “You guys are why I am here. This represents what we have done together as a team.”
Palmer is applying to colleges this fall, with the University of Virginia high on his list. He wants to stay involved in music, but is still considering what his college major might be.
Chantilly students gather in the school auditorium before the ceremony.
USAAAMB students throughout the United States are getting star treatment. Follow the tour’s progress on the USAAAMB Facebook page, and watch videos and read newspaper articles posted on the site.
The U.S. Army All-American Bowl is the premier high school football game in the nation and features America’s top high school senior football players and 125 senior marching musicians.

NAfME Advocacy Staff Follows Progress of ESEA Legislation
On October 19, a crowd gathered on Capitol Hill to watch the markup of a new ESEA bill sponsored Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), chair of the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). The co-sponsor is Senator Mike Enzi (R-Wyoming.)
The bill aims to address the long-delayed reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary School Act. Chris Woodside, assistant executive director for advocacy and public affairs at the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) reported a two-hour wait in line at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, which led to a packed committee room. Attendees expected a session where committee members would debate, amend, and rewrite the proposed legislation. The bill has 144 proposed amendments.
Woodside posted a report on NAfME Groundswell: “Chairman Harkin and Republican Senator Mike Enzi gave their opening remarks, reminding those in attendance of the failures of NCLB, the need to do away with AYP, and the importance of returning education policy authority to the states and building capacity to provide America’s students with ‘well-balanced’ education experiences,” Woodside said.
“For music education advocates, this was actually the highlight of the markup, as Chairman Harkin specifically referenced "music and the arts" as subject matter areas that he wished to see benefit from passage of the new bill. A hopeful sign, indeed,” he added.
Soon after “hope” gave way to what Woodside termed “a bizarre scene.” After several procedural challenges as to whether the markup should even take place, Harkin adjourned the meeting abruptly.
The NAfME Advocacy Staff will continue to follow the bill’s status and provide updates on NAfME Groundswell.
